That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.
Chorus:
Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgement day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."
Chorus
Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.
Chorus x2
I chose a war protest song because there can be no doubt that it is meant to be persuasive. One enthymeme for this song is Do not be quick to go to war with a perceived enemy, because often the cause is unjust, the result devastating, and the enemy may have made a better ally. There have been many audiences for this song. It regains popularity during wartimes and is a standard song at boyscout camps. The general audience aimed for is anyone who has not thought through the consequences of war. The goal is to open their eyes so that they will try to make a difference.
The song is a metaphor. The music is almost like a rock lullaby. It can be sweet and familiar while also empowering. Our discussion on style made me want to choose a song with one of the 3 original criteria. This song definitely uses distinction. The tone, stance, and clarity are consistent. the simplicity of the song makes it nearly impossible for anyone to misunderstand the meaning or the desired message.
The fact that this song has been used in protest of many wars shows its effectiveness. It has certainly not stopped war altogether, but the artists recording it were obviously effected by it and believe that it can continue to open eyes and inspire change.
